String Theory by firestarter1988 String Theory by firestarter1988
Watercolor and gouache. Continuing with “Unseen Events” series this painting represent the concept of String Theory, String Theory or M theory is an incredibly complicated process that involves scientist trying to link together all the know theories of the universe in hopes off creating One Great Unified Theory.
Since the concept of string theory is so complicated and complex I want to give the impression of complexity within my painting. I also wanted to convey the strain that companies trying to link together concept that for hundreds of years have had seemingly nothing to do with each other. A series of strings darting off in different directions and holding in place a pair of forceps against a many layered background. The strings are stretched tight in order to convey the tension accompanying this theory and the strings are colored in variations of bone and skin tones in order to convey the notion of something organic. Thick contrasting blood spurts from where the forceps hold and where the strings are tied together once again emphasizing the strain and pain of trying to link together seemingly unlinkable theories.

this is a really interesting idea, and i like where you're going with it, but i think that being so complicated and hard to understand, you really could have pushed the boundaries on this image ever farther.

perhaps adding many many more faint indications of strings in the background would have created a more vast impression of the possibilities and alternate universes, along with your geometric repeated blue shapes. also, it would be my suggestion that if you are trying to emphasize the tying together of different theories, use different colored threads. i do like the fleshy/marrow colored string as a representation of humankind involved in the string theory, but there are so many different shades of skin, that you could probably keep it biological and show the differences at the same time. in fact, multiple skin tones may even reflect "skin" more than a single beige option.

the tense lines and strain on the scissors does work very well, and the obvious blood at the knots is a firm reinforcement of the pieces being cut. you have also created many lines of vision that help the viewer's eye move around the piece and have successfully created first, second, third and even fourth focal points. overall this is a really great concept, and a tough one to convey for sure, but i say keep pushing for complexity and depth.
